Summary

A light, fun, mystery with a one rather gruesome scene in it。 Set in English occupied India。 I enjoyed the writing, the characters and the view into life at a very different time。

I am completely caught up in the noisy, colourful, atmospheric stories of Bengal post first world full of intrigue, shifting loyalties, administrative hell and murder。As I launched into this volume I felt as if I was caught up in an Indiana Jones adventure, goodies, baddies and a regular sprinkling of derring-do (jungle hunting atop elephants, madcap chases across Calcutta, shutting down phone and telegraph communications。。。) The search is on for the killer of princes。。。Loved it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I rarely give 5 stars but it is so engrossing and I love the writing style。 A bit of humour and a great descriptive style。 A fascinating look at India 100 years ago wrapped around a murder mystery。 Wyndham and Banarjee are a great pair。 I liked the first in the series this one is even better, the author has definitely matured in his writing。 Looking forward to reading the next in the series。

In this, the second of the Sam Wyndham series, Sam is accompanying a Prince from an Indian province when a gunman shoots the Prince。 Sam ends up travelling to the province to investigate but politics , the interests of a dying colonial power, natural resources, religion, and tradition combine to make for an interesting read。This is a well plotted series with a great sense of India in the early 1920s where the sun is setting on the empire。

A ripping yarn。

Ok what? After a promising first book, this was a bit pointless。 No real resolution。 End kind of fizzles out。 After a lot a death and frenetic events and chasing after possible suspects, the ending was like: oh the murderer is someone else, oops, my bad, whatevs, the end。

4。5 stars。 Loved this detective novel based in 1920 India。 Rich descriptions, complicated plot and a flawedMain character。 Also insight into how the British saw the Indians in that period of time which is disturbing。

I loved this one too。 More stories from India, which I love, I can smell the smells and feel the heat。 To know more in depth about the religion and the way people lived there。 Beautiful book。

another good book in the series。I started reading this series of books as the first one was on offer。 I’m very glad I did , and I will keep reading them , They are a odd couple of detectives, a bit like McDonald and Dodds but that’s what keeps them interesting。

Justice & An Inconvenient Truth Abir Mukherjee crafts another sophisticated murder mystery set against India on the cusp of massive social and political change。 With a complex storyline, our hero detective weaves through the political intrigue of a royal family assassination。 Lies and outright deception are only part of the story。 The struggle of our detective to maintain his mental balance while fighting his own addiction merits its own rich narrative addition to this story。 Our committed dete Justice & An Inconvenient Truth Abir Mukherjee crafts another sophisticated murder mystery set against India on the cusp of massive social and political change。 With a complex storyline, our hero detective weaves through the political intrigue of a royal family assassination。 Lies and outright deception are only part of the story。 The struggle of our detective to maintain his mental balance while fighting his own addiction merits its own rich narrative addition to this story。 Our committed detective’s search for justice runs up against his discovery of an inconvenient truth to the solution to this murder mystery。 For a mystery reader, how could one wish for more? 。。。more

Better than the first。 Really liked the resolution。

Good second book in series no need to read the first one。 In India a British and an Indian policeman works through the intricacies of life in the palace of a Maharaja。 There is death and mayhem, but the Brit knows when to hold his tongue and let his subordinate take over。

Mixed feelings。 The pace of the plotline like in any police thriller, the majority of the book you are going in circles without hard evidence。 The pace picks up until the last few chapters。We are going in circles trapped in political intrigue。 You can easily finish the story quickly so that's a point in favor of this series。The environment and description are wonderful, you do get the idea of where you are。The characters did not grip me so that might be why the story was just ok。 I will not be c Mixed feelings。 The pace of the plotline like in any police thriller, the majority of the book you are going in circles without hard evidence。 The pace picks up until the last few chapters。We are going in circles trapped in political intrigue。 You can easily finish the story quickly so that's a point in favor of this series。The environment and description are wonderful, you do get the idea of where you are。The characters did not grip me so that might be why the story was just ok。 I will not be continuing the series。 。。。more

This is an excellent novel, combining a robust plot with immensely plausible characters, with a heavy dose of historical background of India in the 1920s thrown in。 It also marks the return of Captain Sam Wyndham and his Harrow-educated colleague, ‘Surrender-Not’ Banerjee, who first appeared in A Rising Man。Wyndham and Banerjee find themselves being driven in the Rolls Royce of the heir to the throne of Sambalpore, one of the princedoms within the Raj system whose wealth had been based on rich d This is an excellent novel, combining a robust plot with immensely plausible characters, with a heavy dose of historical background of India in the 1920s thrown in。 It also marks the return of Captain Sam Wyndham and his Harrow-educated colleague, ‘Surrender-Not’ Banerjee, who first appeared in A Rising Man。Wyndham and Banerjee find themselves being driven in the Rolls Royce of the heir to the throne of Sambalpore, one of the princedoms within the Raj system whose wealth had been based on rich diamond deposits。 As it happens, the prince had been at Harrow with ‘Surrender-Not’, and is expected to succeed his father to the throne fairly soon, with a broad expectation that he will continue an enlightened regime, utilising the province’s wealth to improve the life of the subjects。 Such specualtions prove irrelevant, however, when the prince is assassinated。 Wyndham and Banerjee pursue the assailant, but are initially unable to apprehend him。 They do catch up with him the following day, following up anonymously provided clues, but the assassin shoots himself before he can be arrested。 Further leads point to Sambalpore itself, and as a consequence, Wyndham and Banerjee find themselves despatched there to pursue their investigations, and find a wide range of potential suspects。I have to profess to being lamentably ignorant of Indian history, and the panoply of religious beliefs, which play some part in the story。 Abir Mukherjee manages these elements deftly, being hugely informative while never letting the transfer of knowledge compromise the flow of the story。 。。。more

A Crown Prince visits Calcutta and is assassinated in a car while being accompanied by Captain Wyndham and Sargent Banerjee。 Then the assassin, after a roof-top chase, shoots himself。 Sam believes that the answers are not in Calcutta but in the Prince's home town。 They take a train to Sambalpore, a small state with tigers and elephants and a Maharaja in charge。 Great writing。 But as the Maharaja's first wife let's Sam know, finding the truth is one thing, finding justice is another。 I'll read th A Crown Prince visits Calcutta and is assassinated in a car while being accompanied by Captain Wyndham and Sargent Banerjee。 Then the assassin, after a roof-top chase, shoots himself。 Sam believes that the answers are not in Calcutta but in the Prince's home town。 They take a train to Sambalpore, a small state with tigers and elephants and a Maharaja in charge。 Great writing。 But as the Maharaja's first wife let's Sam know, finding the truth is one thing, finding justice is another。 I'll read the next one。 。。。more

A great read The more I read, the more I like Sam Wyndham and Surrender-Not。 They are the beacon of largely enlightened good, in the rapidly changing world of 1920s India。 As this story reveals, they are seekers of truth, but does the truth always accompany justice?

Mystery set in 1920 in India while still under British Rule。 However, some small states are kingdoms outside British complete rule。 The prince of one kingdom is assassinated while in Calcutta。 The prince was being guarded by Sam Wyndham and his sergeant "Surrender-not" Wyndham's nickname for him as he can't pronounce his Indian name。 Adventure takes place mainly in the kingdom of Sampalpore。 Lots of palace intrigue。 Mystery set in 1920 in India while still under British Rule。 However, some small states are kingdoms outside British complete rule。 The prince of one kingdom is assassinated while in Calcutta。 The prince was being guarded by Sam Wyndham and his sergeant "Surrender-not" Wyndham's nickname for him as he can't pronounce his Indian name。 Adventure takes place mainly in the kingdom of Sampalpore。 Lots of palace intrigue。 。。。more

Such an interesting book that I learned a lot from while trying to figure out the very tricky mystery。 There are plenty of twists and turns to keep it fun。 I think it does help to start with the first book in the series, but could be doable if you missed it。

This was another awesome entry into the Sam Wyndham series。 I continue to love Wyndham and Banerjee。 Sam is so smart and yet so fallible you can't help but root for him while at the same time being exasperated at some of the choices he makes。 The mystery was a good one although the ending felt a little abrupt。 I enjoyed the journey we got to go on with these two as they try to unravel a very complicated case。 All in all, a great book。 This was another awesome entry into the Sam Wyndham series。 I continue to love Wyndham and Banerjee。 Sam is so smart and yet so fallible you can't help but root for him while at the same time being exasperated at some of the choices he makes。 The mystery was a good one although the ending felt a little abrupt。 I enjoyed the journey we got to go on with these two as they try to unravel a very complicated case。 All in all, a great book。 。。。more
